This group will learn how to find safety and regulation in the body. Participants will learn and use hand sewing with other art materials to process traumatic experiences. This creative support group is facilitated by a Bloom art therapist. Participants of all ages are offered an art directive but may choose to freely create. Each week, we will share the benefits of improved physical and mental well-being and experience available services to accomplish this. Topics will include skincare, reiki techniques, womb wellness, and women’s mental health. Together, we will develop a plan for implementing wellness in our daily lives, which is especially important as we approach the holiday season and the potential for seasonal depression.
“We all need to remember that change at the grass-root level doesn’t happen from one big initiative. It happens from a series of small but significant efforts. We all can be, and need to be, part of the solution.”
-Mike Lovell PhD
It is with tremendous sadness that those of us at Scaling Wellness in Milwaukee (SWIM) join the Lovell family, friends, and the entire Marquette University community in mourning the loss of SWIM Co-founder Marquette President Dr. Michael Lovell. At this most difficult time, our thoughts, sympathies, and prayers are with Dr. Lovell’s wife, Amy, and their four children, Marissa, Matthew, Anna, and Kevin.
Mike and Amy Lovell championed SWIM from the beginning, leading the charge to destigmatize the topic of trauma. Frank Cumberbatch, SWIM Board President and long-time friend of Dr. Lovell, noted, “Mike was the toughest human being I’ve ever met. Mike’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual strength were beyond impressive. I knew Mike as a man who loved his family, his faith, and Marquette University, and believed in helping others. My heart is heavy with sadness for his wife, Amy, and their four children.”
SWIM exists because of the persistence and determination of Mike and Amy Lovell. While developing SWIM, Dr. Lovell shared details about his own childhood trauma, and courageously sought to create a path towards healing for those who have endured trauma, especially in Milwaukee’s Near West Side. It was with great excitement and energy that Dr. Lovell and Amy supported SWIM’s current move to the Concordia-27 Hub.
All of us associated with SWIM are committed to ensuring that Dr. Lovell’s legacy lives on forever through the services SWIM provides in supporting a healthy and vibrant Near West Side. May Dr. Lovell rest in peace.
At SWIM, we recognize that trauma has many faces.
