Chapter 1: A Community in Crisis (2016-2017)
SWIM emerged in response to a series of suicides on Milwaukee’s South Shore, exposing the deep and unaddressed trauma within the community. Recognizing the urgent need for action, Amy and Michael Lovell and Frank Cumberbatch launched an initiative to bring attention to the crisis. What began as a series of conversations quickly evolved into a movement—SWIM was born, though not yet formally established.
Chapter 2: Building a Foundation (2018-2022)
As dialogue turned into action, SWIM incorporated as a nonprofit, hired staff, and secured its first physical space at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Community demand for trauma-informed services, particularly in workforce development training grew. SWIM’s impact deepened, but space constraints signaled the need for expansion.
Chapter 3: A Strategic Partnership (2023-2024)
In 2023, SWIM joined forces with Marquette University's Center for Peacemaking, strengthening its administrative capacity and broadening its reach across Milwaukee. This partnership paved the way for SWIM’s most ambitious project yet—the creation of the SWIM Hub at Concordia 27, a state-of-the-art wellness center offering treatment rooms and collaborative space for key partners in mental health and holistic healing.
Chapter 4: A Legacy of Healing and Growth (2024-Present)
Just as the SWIM Hub was preparing to open its doors at Concordia 27, June 2024 marked a profound loss as SWIM co-founder Dr. Michael Lovell passed away, leaving a legacy of compassion and resilience. His vision lives on as SWIM continues to grow, now under the leadership of its new director, Jill Drzewiecki. With a thriving community of practitioners and a dedicated space for preventing and responding to trauma, SWIM remains steadfast in its mission to transform Milwaukee and SE Wisconsin through trauma-responsive care and wellness offerings.
